Truffle Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Printable)

A luxurious twist on the classic grilled cheese with Gruyère, truffle oil, and perfectly crispy buttery bread slices.

# What you need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices sourdough bread or artisan bread

→ Cheese

02 - 4.2 oz Gruyère cheese, grated or thinly sliced

→ Spreads & Oils

03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
04 - 1 to 2 tsp truffle oil, white or black

→ Seasoning

05 - Freshly ground black pepper to taste
06 - Pinch of sea salt, optional

# How to make it:

01 - Lay out bread slices and spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice.
02 - Flip bread over and drizzle truffle oil on the unbuttered side of two slices. Evenly distribute Gruyère cheese over the truffle oil-drizzled bread slices.
03 - Lightly season cheese with black pepper and a pinch of salt if desired. Top each with remaining bread slices, butter side facing outward.
04 - Heat a non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium-low heat.
05 - Place sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until bread is golden brown and crisp and cheese is melted. Lower heat if bread browns too quickly before cheese melts.
06 - Remove from pan, let rest 1 minute, then slice and serve immediately.

# Helpful Hints:

01 -
  • It takes a childhood favorite and makes it feel like something you'd order at a wine bar, without any complicated techniques.
  • The truffle oil adds an earthy richness that makes every bite feel indulgent, even on a regular Tuesday.
  • You can have it on the table in fifteen minutes, which means it works for both lazy weekends and actual emergencies.
02 -
  • If you add the truffle oil to the buttered side, it won't make contact with the cheese and you'll lose most of the flavor, so always drizzle it on the inside.
  • Medium-low heat feels too slow at first, but it's the only way to get crispy bread and melted cheese at the same time without burning anything.
03 -
  • Grate your own cheese instead of buying pre-shredded, it melts better and doesn't have any anti-caking agents that can make it grainy.
  • Press the sandwich gently with your spatula while it cooks to help the cheese melt faster and create better contact with the pan for even browning.
